Scion Groves

Each person who has come to know how valuable it is to preserve the remnants of the majestic criollo we have received from the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade some 453 years ago.

We are steadfast with the search and continually look for backyard cacao trees that were lost in time.

Once we find more, we teach these owners to propagate them. Its the only way to give thanks to history and that “magical chance” that the heirloom cacaos have continued to flourish in our country. We also thank that our country is in the sweet spot of the equator where no country can duplicate.

Join us as a member and we can help answer the heed to alleviate poverty. It is our land. It is our future.

And the Search for Criollo Continues

Today me and Balrly were invited to check out a 50+years old cacao tree in the farm of my good friend in Mt. Kanlaon.

We were not disappointed with what we saw.

It is a remnant of the old cacao trees that the old Hacienda owners planted.

Here are some photos of this beautiful heirloom cacao tree deserving to be a Filipino Aromatico cultivar.

At the End of the Rainbow is a Pot of GOLD

The Cacao Troopers headed south one fine day. Not to look for a new find but to validate the authenticity of SN-00032.

We thought the area was just ’round the corner but to our shock,

image

The road from here to eternity shrunk in size. Thank goodness to our driver, Kuya Rolly, the van we were riding seemed to have a life of its own. It was a two-way street where (only in the Philippines) you would find this.

image

imageimageIt is a golden rule that when an ascending vehicle is approaching another descending vehicle, the latter gives way. This is on the premise that the latter resides there and knows the route by heart.

We came across three “buwis-buhay” or death-defying routes where one miscalculated move would bring us to the ground below or the heavens above. Thank goodness we saw the light (at the end of the rainbow is a pot of gold).image imageIt was a treat as the Cacao Troopers took their time to snap photos of SN-00032. Our guests Mr. Wataru Ikuta and Ms. Tsuruta from Japan, Mr. Tony Grafilo from Hawaii, Mr. Linus Lee from Singapore and Mr. Steven DeVries from Denver, Colorado USA gathered around in awe. What we found was a 60 year old heirloom cacao tree. Such a beauty!

imageimageimageAnts. These insects sometimes cause alarm to cacao farmers. For you see, these ants go near where sweetness is present. Those are not pod borers. The ants are after the sweet secretions coming from the mealy bugs and aphids.

Should your cacao pods have borers, it is to be remembered that the Search for Criollo includes cacao pods that have them. Plantacion de Sikwate will help in the rehabilitation of these trees and pods since they possess the GOLD.

image image imageThe cut-test came to make sure of the authenticity of the cacao variety. Have we found yet another Snow White or was it Jack Black? 🙂

image image imageOf course, aside from the cut-test, we need to do a taste test! Mr. Steven DeVries did the honors together with the rest of the Cacao Troopers.

“Yes, it was sweet, alright!” He said. If you were wondering how the other cacao seeds were, all had white and pinkish white seeds! Hello Snow White!

image  imageWhile looking upwards, we found beautiful cacao pods that were a little too high to get. Well, we got to taste the lower level pods so that was it. image image imageimage image

Heirloom Rainforest Cacao Plantation

Heirloom Rainforest cacao plantation area in the beautiful highlands of Negros Occidental, Philippines. A place where remnants of the Mesoamerican Criollo can still be found giving the all white beans. We hope to save them and make available for our artisan chocolatiers soon.

Silay Highlands Cacao Adventure

imageimage imageimagePDS President Chris Fadriga was with Manong Dolping, PDS interim Vice-President for Negros Occidental the other day.image imageHe recounts that part of ‘nong Dolping’s  2000 plus cacao seedlings planted about 3 years ago have started to produce pods and will start to harvest a few pods soon.

Planting materials came from seeds of old cacao trees just around the Barrio of Patag.

“We would like to see some Fino Aromatico trees from them.” Mr. Fadriga confidently said.

He also started to do side grafting some for the heirloom cacao giving the white beans.
